Challenge
Transforming a complex, 2-tier architecture to a complex 3-tier
architecture with special emphasis on a fully supported middle tier
using EJB.
Solution
A complex design set to support 19 Entity Beans and 4 Session Beans
using Sybase EA Server to later facilitate C++ API generation.
Results
We leveraged CocoBase O/R mapping capabilities to assist in code
generation of our Entity Beans, resulting in significant cost and
time saving. This allowed our developers to focus on integration
of business rules and the session bean logic.
Complex
transformation under an accelerated deadline
We were tasked with migrating a large military database from a 2
tier architecture to a 3 tier architecture focusing on the development
of the middle tier using EJB. The database structure is very complex
having 19 root tables with an average of 15 child tables under each
(1-M relationships). Under some circumstances, the parent child
table relationships extended 4 levels deep. Full support in the
middle tier including retrieving/persisting data from/to the database
had to be accomplished within 6 months.
We inherited some legacy code which supported a few of the database
functional areas of the database. The code, however, was implemented
using a competing product, TopLink. We were very concerned about
the product initially from a price perspective because of its 7K
runtime fee weighed against our 100+ worldwide deployment needs.
We later chose CocoBase after a technical trade study which not
only considered price but capabilities.
We leveraged CocoBase O/R mapping capabilities to assist in code
generation of our Entity Beans which resulted in significant cost
and time savings. This allowed our developers to focus on integration
of business rules and the session bean logic.
Significant cost and time savings in our bean development resulting
in being able to save about 3 months of development time through
CocoBase automatic code generation features. We also anticipate
significant performance benefits from CocoBase caching and runtime
features."
